No, this is not a throwback to the 80s when everyone wore blue eyeshadow and it was terribly unflattering. A BIG trend right now in eye makeup is colored eyeliner, especially in pastels, including–you got it–pale blue. Done right, this can be a beautiful look. The Beauty Department has a couple excellent posts on this that are really fun. Here’s my take on the trend.
First I start with black liquid eyeliner on an eyelid that is naked except for a dusting of mineral powder. I find it easier to apply liquid eyeliner if there’s no eye shadow on it. Here I’ve used my trusty Eyeko Skinny Liquid Eyeliner in Black – $16. If you’re new to applying liquid eyeliner, here’s a secret–it’s difficult for everyone, at least at first. Practice and eventually you’ll get the hang of it. Another black liner that’s easy to use, and cheaper than the Eyeko is Milani Ultrafine Liquid Eyeliner in Black Vinyl – $7.49. Make sure to dab the sides of it against the container before applying–a little goes a long way.
Next, layer a blue liner on top of the black line–try to avoid overlapping the colors. Here I’ve used the exceptional Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner in Turquoise – $20. This stuff is amazing. First–it looks awesome. Second–it is so, so easy to use. It’s really easy to draw a straight line, and the perfect amount of makeup comes out of the tip. It’s great.
Finally, I finished it with Benefit They’re Real! Mascara - $23. This is a really fun look for summer, and it can be used in formal or casual occasions. Another option, if you don’t want to try liquid eyeliner, is using a regular pencil eyeliner instead. Sephora Contour Eye Pencil 12hr Wear Waterproof in Summer Cruise – $9 is a beautiful turquoise color, a little darker than the Stila. I’ve used it for this look and gotten a lot of compliments. But if you dig the look of liquid eyeliner but get frustrated with the application, don’t give up! Practice applying at night before you wash your face–no one will see your raccoon eyes. Except for the cat. And the cat doesn’t judge you. Well actually, the cat judges you a lot, but not for your makeup.
